Identification of cannabis use as part of one's identity despite negative consequences may have profound ramifications for treatment or prevention efforts. This study evaluates this issue using a sample of emerging adults who report frequent cannabis use. Correlational analyses reveal that cannabis self-concept is associated with frequency of use, problems associated with cannabis use, coping motives for cannabis use and enhancement motives for cannabis use.
Origins
Cannabis westcoastbud.io is the world's most cultivated and misused illegal drug, used both recreationally for its hallucinogenic effects as well as medically for various medicinal and therapeutic applications. Cannabis can be found practically in every country on Earth and accounts for half of all drug seizures globally.
Cannabis (commonly referred to as hemp or marihuana) originated some 28 million years ago on the Northeast Tibetan Plateau. A close relative of hops used to make beer, hemp has since spread throughout Central Asia where farmers continue harvesting its fiber for rope making, clothing manufacturing and paper making purposes.
Palynological and seed fossil records suggest that wild Cannabis spread from its center of origin throughout Europe and East Asia during postglacial ice retreat long before the appearance of Homo sapiens. This may have been facilitated by water (hydrochory) or animals (zoochory).
Cannabis has undergone extensive artificial selection over time, leading to multiple varieties for diverse uses. Today, cultivated Cannabis can be divided into four biotypes based on morphological and chemical traits: narrow-leaf hemp (NLH), broad-leaf hemp (BLH), narrow-leaf drug (NLD) and sinsemilla which combines these characteristics - with fiber/oil production as well as psychoactive effects being possible simultaneously.
Medicinal Use
Cannabis may help alleviate some mental health conditions, including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Furthermore, cannabis has also been shown to decrease anxiety in those suffering from social anxiety disorder. Cannabis may help treat conditions such as fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis. Cannabis contains at least 120 active cannabinoids; of these compounds, CBD and THC are the two best-known ones, providing various psychoactive effects and creating certain euphoric states in users. Psychosis, in which one loses touch with reality and experiences hallucinations or delusion, may result from taking cannabis products that contain THC; such as Dronabinol or Nabilone are two oral THC medications approved in the US to treat PTSD. Medicinal cannabis refers to quality assured products approved and prescribed by physicians - in this instance Dronabinol or Nabilone are both approved.
Marijuana is a plant-based drug, commonly smoked as hand-rolled cigarettes (called joints); pipes like water pipes; blunts; or vapourisers (an electronic device that heats the drug to produce vapour). Smoking marijuana may make you feel relaxed, giggly or sleepy depending on your desired effect.
Recreational Use
Cannabis is an immensely popular recreational drug among young people and should be seen as potentially harmful due to its wide use. Cannabis use poses serious risks that could impede learning, memory and decision-making while altering coordination and reaction times leading to car accidents and serious injuries. Smoking early-on could increase psychotic symptoms; smoking while pregnant could result in birth defects.
Recreational drug use is an accepted part of life during adolescence. Unfortunately, however, many young people who start smoking weed quickly move onto more potent substances like cocaine - due to exposure to dealers or changes in brain chemistry caused by cannabis itself. Within two miles of Ryan McLaughlin's research lab at Washington State University in Pullman lies a cannabis dispensary selling eight times stronger products than his lab can access for its federally approved research projects.
Legality
Cannabis is an herbal drug commonly used for its euphoric and psychoactive properties. Cannabis contains cannabinoids such as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC and other cannabinoids influence both brain function and nervous system activity, producing psychoactive effects in its users that include happiness, giggly giggles and sleepiness; it may also make some people confused or paranoid; its consumption poses potential health risks especially when combined with tobacco products or taken in large doses; cannabis may increase risk for car accidents as well.
Some governments regulate cannabis for medical and recreational use, yet its federal legality remains illegal and difficult to legally acquire. Consumers sometimes turn to illegal sellers because they offer more easily accessible, more cost-effective cannabis; often operated by members of their community instead of large corporations as are legal stores; some bills being considered in Congress seek to improve access to banking services for cannabis businesses in order to help build credit ratings more quickly.
